Out of Armley

It might not be quite what you expect - a jobs-fair inside a prison. But the ‘Out of Armley’ group of training providers and employers recognise that one of the ways of stopping re-offending is to ensure that prisoners have a clear plan of how they are going to get employment once they are released.

So that was the idea of having a jobs-fair; the first one ever at HMP Leeds in Armley.

ELFM have worked closely with the prison and probation service for a number of years - see the Outside Looking In series of programmes - and we were only too happy to come and see what happened on the day…

  2. I work for the Council in West Leeds, and we supported the ‘Out of Armley’ event from our Neighbourhood Renewal Fund budget. The podcast really brought this project to life in a way that a written report or even photographs cannot. It was clearly an excellent day that both prisoners, prison staff and employers got a lot out of.

  3. I am Jobcentreplus staff based in HMP Leeds and this recording makes everyone’s efforts in getting the Jobsfair up and running so worthwhile. What an amazing mix of prison staff, providers, employers and inmates all acknowledging the event as something unique and special. It brings out the whole positive atmosphere of the day.
Looking forward to the next one.

  4. We both work for Leeds Ahead and had a small amount of funding from Neighbourhood Renewal Fund budget to develop the “Out of Armley” project. A Big Thank You to Adrian for capturing the mood of the day and so nice to hear that all stakeholders of this event felt the benefit. Lets hope this now become a regular event. As a result of this day, 5 inmates have gained employment which is brilliant. It is so good to think that collectively we have helped individuals that otherwise may not have been able to access employment on release.
