On May 8th at 6pm ELFM airs a brand new drama serial, Ika Roa. Ika Roa is a gripping science fiction epic specially written and produced for ELFM. We will be holding back the climactic 7th episode until the end of our Live@Chapel week, as well as repeating all the preceding six thirty minute episodes during those five word- and music-soaked festival days (beginning June 18th).
About Ika Roa:
On the desolate planet of Ika-Roa, two colonies struggle to co-habit peacefully after centuries cut off from the rest of the human race. Kara, the leader of the ritualistic First People, devoutly maintains her people’s isolationist traditions while their more moderate neighbours, led by the pragmatic Governor Warren, attempt to cope with spiralling population and hostile environmental conditions.
Tense relations between the two groups are strained further when a trading ship discovers Ika-Roa. At first, the amiable Captain Darrow tries to help the populace, offering food and medical supplies. But when the valuable mineral Esphora is discovered on Ika-Roa, a gold rush begins and the planet is quickly swamped by settlers from across the galaxy.
Desperate for the help they can offer, Governor Warren welcomes the traders whereas Kara and her people become even more isolated. Tensions between the three communities build steadily and despite Darrow’s efforts to control the situation, his company puts pressure on him to increase Esphora mining and milk the planet for all it’s worth. Soon, the whole of Ika-Roa is on the brink of violence and even the three leader’s painstaking negotiations and deft political manoeuvring can’t save the planet from the storm on the horizon.
About the writers:
Marcos Avlonitis is a writer and producer for RicoMark Productions. Not one to be pigeonholed, he is also a director, set builder, website designer and general creator of things. Marcos has a penchant for fine tea and singing badly.
Richard Caves is RicoMark Productions’ certified philosopher-in-residence but manages to make space in his schedule to write and produce – sometimes simultaneously. The remainder of his time is filled playing board games and walking his ferret.
RicoMark Productions was founded by Marcos Avlonitis and Richard Caves as an outlet for their combined mania and creative genius. Their first production, Ika-Roa, is a seven-part radio drama commissioned by ELFM, airing in May 2012. Upcoming projects include a short film, a web series and a prequel to Ika-Roa.
