The tree has been taken down, all the pressies have been used and lost their novelty and mince pies just don’t taste good anymore. But fear not, ELFM is hear to brighten up your January! We are bringing you a host of great broadcasts to blow the winter blues away. And if you miss them, it doesn’t matter as all are shows are up on our website to listen again. Here’s what’s in store…
Tuesday Night Takeaways (every Tuesday from 6pm)
6-7.30pm: Communitication
Our weekly serving of news and interviews from East Leeds and beyond all wrapped up by great local music. All this and live music courtesy of our weekly house band; this month we welcome Joseph & David, Georgette Hill, Alice O and Rob Green, all of whom have agreed to take the Tuesday night tune challenge!
7.30-9pm: The Buffet
A different week – a different show! Bringing you a revolving platter of radio-based entertainment.
3rd Jan: Urban Fusion- DJ El Fire brings you the best in R&B, Hip-Hop and Dance Hall
10th Jan: Gospel Gangster – Mr Paul Eubanks brings us a collection of contemporary gospel music, in his own inimitable style.
17th Jan: Side Salad – A round up of all things wordy with poetry, stories and guests.
24th Jan: Scene To Be Heard - Catch up with all the goings on in the Leeds Music Scene with our very own scene kid Heather Marsden.
The Warm Up Sessions (13th & 27th January from 8pm)
The best and newest in underground House and Techno to bounce the dance floor – or your kitchen lino. Plus live mixes from guest DJ’s from the Leeds underground – not to mention our resident DJs, Jess Scott, KOD & Rick Whitfield.
The Sunday Joint (8th January from 4pm)
A marvelous mix of Listening Stuff for you this very weekend on The Sunday Joint. Get stuck in!!!
4pm-5: The ELFM Shuffle-The best of local music on the best station for local music.
5pm-7: The Word Salad- Our monthly programme for wordsters of all persuasions. Take a theme and mine it deep through stories poetry and discussion. This month we look at the sticky subject of Class.
7pm: Live From The Parlour- ELFM’s very own sanctuary of live music opens it’s doors once again to play host to a musical guest.
In & Out Of School: (Tues 24th from 2pm)
Our schools-based show looking at what is happening in schools in the East Leeds area…and beyond! As well as interviews, news, music, quizzes and a load of fun for everyone to join in with. Every month one lucky school gets to leave the comfort of their classroom and head over to ELFM towers to help present the show and tell us what is happening in their school.
East Leeds Writing Group (Wed 18th Jan Seacroft Library 3.30pm)
Keeping up with our commitment to promoting and encouraging all things word-based, ELFM have set up their very own creative writing group. We welcome anyone of any age who is intrested in writing their own work, be it short stories, poetry or plays. Come along and get some guidance from writer and poet (as well as our director of words) Peter Spafford. Oh, and it’s free!
Holocaust memorial Day (Sunday 29th Han, Leeds Town Hal, 1.30-3pm)
As part of the Holocaust Memorial Day commemorations our young people from Next Generation were commissioned to create a piece of performance on this years theme Speak Up, Speak Out. They have spent the past two months creating Voices On Air written, devised and performed by the group which focuses on the story of radio as a means of communication, revolution and hope. The event is free and open to everyone.
ELFM Live Presents… handmadehands Live. (Saturday 4th February, East Leeds Rugby Club, 7.30pm)
Continuing our commitment to bring live music to East Leeds, ELFM returns to East Leeds Rugby club with one of the most exciting acts around handmadehands. Joining them on the bill will be a host of young bands that ELFM continue to support. You can pay what you like to see this gig, with no minimum charge.
ELFM is a community radio station which means… we need the community to run it; don’t panic there’s a trained and friendly team of professionals to help you out! Here’s how you can dig in:
Volunteers Meeting: (Wednesday 11th January 6-7.30pm @ Boggart Hill)
If you’ve never been to ELFM, this is a great place to start. Here you can meet the team. This will be your chance to find out what’s going on and suggest ideas about what ELFM should be doing. And most importantly: there is always cake! For more information contact ed@headstogether.org
ELFM Live at East Leeds Rugby Club: (Sat 10th March & Sat 14th April)
Following on with our series of live music we present two more fabulous gigs from East leeds Rugby Club. On 10th March Lunchtime Disco Club will be displaying why they have become such a cherrished live act by anyone who loves smart quirky pop and on 14th April we bring you three of the most promising young acts in our fair city Seas-of-Green, Francesca Pidgeon and The Artists. All local all live. You can pay what you like to see this gig, with no minimum charge.
