Gipton Funday - Thursday 14th Feb

Posted by Adrian on February 11, 2008 – 4:38 pm | No Comments

Get yourself down to the Henry Barran Centre for Valentine’s Day: have a look at the leaflet - Gipton Fun Day

ELFM will be there of course - doing some outdoor broadcasts - but not just us…

Over 40 organisations from the Fire Service, colleges through to Job Centre plus and Credit Union. From bingo, raffles to bouncy castles, football to face painting, circus skills and competitions. A host of organisations will be promoting their services to the local community in the hope of encouraging people access local provision, join local residents groups, volunteer, access learning and employment and discuss any community related issues with the Police, fire, housing and other counselling services.

Everything is free. Although there will be a small charge for hot food as money will be going towards the Internet Café which will, hopefully, be running at the Henry Barran Centre in the near future.

What an interesting insight this discussion of what local action and initiatives by residents associations was. In a very short period of time significant improvements had been achieved through the initiative of local residents.

if you want to learn more about residents associations or even how to start one you can contact our two programme guests as follows:

Lily Woods Chair of Seacoft Green residents association - 07951 785845 - marsden858@btinternet.com

Mick Woods Boggart Hill Action Group - 07738 259275 - mick_dodds@hotmail.co.uk

Your Community - Monday’s show

Posted by Adrian on – 9:22 am | No Comments

What’s it like round here?

Time to get to grips with what’s happening in Gipton today. We start off with a podcast that Janet Heighton made before she left the Church of the Epiphany last year - Seven Years in Seven Minutes. We will also try and catch up with Janet who is now over in Skelmersdale.

Then we have Alan Taylor in the studio - Councillor for Gipton and Harehills and Deputy Lord Mayor of Leeds. What is the Council doing for the area?

And our final guest of the evening is Lou Hemmerman from Leeds University who is working up in Gipton as part of the Timescapes Research Project. Universities studying people in rundown areas of the city… who benefits?

Alan Metcalfe and Adrian Sinclair are presenting - and would be happy for your contributions - emails, texts, comments on the website and phone-calls

You can listen again to the programme yourself…
