As part of our work experience we were asked to go down to Gipton fire station to interview the young fire fighters in Year 11 from Boston Spa High School. The students are taking a one-year BTEC course in fire and rescue in the community which is worth two GCSE’s at B grade. The course has both practical and written elements, with most of the practical elements done at Gipton as well as the written side. The students follow a strict code of conduct which is signed by both themselves and their parents.

We’ve had an urgent phone-call from our friends producing Gipton Panto. Gipton Panto is a jewel in the heart of East Leeds – running for the past 10 years. 3 weeks before this year’s show goes on at the Epiphany Church in Gipton, the leading boy has been forced to pull out.

Could you come to the rescue? They are looking for someone who could play Aladdin opposite the Princess (who is 14) – so you would either be a teenager or someone who plays young. Of cours, being a panto, either sex may apply…

If you or anyone you know could rub the magic lamp – then please get in touch – email info@elfm.co.uk or call us on 08709 90 50 90 and we will get Roger – the director – to give you a call to talk it through.

Oh no he won’t … Oh yes he will!

Stuart Wilson works for the Fire and Rescue Service based at Gipton Fire Station. He got in touch with ELFM about doing a fire safety message for bonfire night. Michaela and Abi were suitably excited, even though Stuart couldn’t come to the studio – but they managed to get him on the phone. Sounds like they’ve blagged their way into a trip round the fire station though. Have a listen…

The Caravan of Love has been on the road again today, but this time in the sunshine – maybe it’s not cursed after all! Today we took our roadshow to the Gipton Gala at the Fearnville Leisure Centre and I think it’s fair to say that a great time was had by all. We broadcast from 10.30 through to nearly 4pm and during that time we had a large number of visitors to the Caravan, everyone from Gala visitors to the Gala Queen and her Attendant.

We made a lot of new friends and a number of people expressed an interest in getting involved in the upcoming big summer broadcast – if you left your details we’ll be in touch.

A big thank you to all involved in organising this years Gala and to all of the people who made us feel so welcome through the day.

Thanks for listening and keep an eye of the website for details of our next broadcast, from July 20th online and July 21st on 87.7FM and online!

Happy Valentines everyone!
We had 3 callers today which was super so thank you to everyone who called in!
The chat up lines went down very well and if anyone does try any of them we would like to know how they turned out.
Our favourite were :
When they made the alphabet they should have put U and I together.
I’m new in town, could i have directions to your apartment and
I know milk does a body good, but DAMN…how much have you been drinking?
We had loads of fun dancing to the love songs and chatting to Jason’s boss, Diana, who is an amazing singer. She sung Loving You and it was really good. She also talked about some of the jobshops she is involved with, if you would like to get help to get back into employment just come along to GAP and the staff will be happy to help you.
We will be posting the pictures of us dancing later!

Welcome to the Mind the GAP Valentines menu challenge. We are encouraging people to make a 3 course romantic meal for their loved one as a Valentines treat-

and all for under £20!Menu

A salad of tender lettuce hearts, cherry tomatoes and
heart shaped croûtons and feta cheese
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
Fillet of (fish)(chicken)(quorn) dressed seductively
on a bed of perfumed rice and a sauce of mushrooms.
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
Raspberry sensationIngredients

Lettuce, such as iceberg or romaine etc,
Cherry tomatoes- about 8 each
2 slices of bread
Small pack of feta cheese

2 Fillets of (fish)(chicken)(quorn)-this is your choice
2 cups of Rice
1 Onion
Thyme
Carton of mushrooms such as chestnut, closed cup or wild
1 carton of double cream
white wine (optional)
Stock cube- vegetable

1 Punnet of raspberries
1 tub of Greek thick yogurt
1 small pack of plain oats
honey
1 chocolate flake
1 measure of spirit or liquor of choice such as rum, Bailey’s, whiskey etc.

Method

To prepare the salad

Take off the outer, bitter leaves of the lettuce and use the sweeter inner section. Break up the lettuce and give it a good wash, then drain well to remove all the water. Cut the cherry tomatoes in half. Using a small knife, cut each slice of bread corner to corner so you have 4 triangles, cut each of these in half again so you have 8 triangles. Now carefully use the small knife to shape each slice into heart shapes. Gently shallow fry these and drain on kitchen paper to remove excess grease. Dice the feta into small pieces. Mix all of these ingredients together and serve nicely on a plate with a little salad dressing if desired.

To prepare the Fillet

It is up to you as to your choice, but you can do this recipe with either fish, chicken or quorn.
Shallow fry the fillet in a little oil until lightly golden. This will be served with the sauce on a bed of rice.

To prepare the rice

Boil a little water in a pan with half a finely chopped onion and seasoning and vegetable stock cube. Wash the rice in a colander until the starch is removed and the water runs clear. Add the rice to the water and add more water if needed until the rice is just covered. Don’t overdo the water. Put the lid on the pan and steam the rice gently on the lowest light until the rice is soft and dry. If you need to add more water along the way then you can but try to keep it fairly dry or the rice will be too soggy.

To prepare the sauce

Finely chop the remaining half of onion gently fry in a pan with a little oil or butter until soft. Add the mushrooms and cook until the mushrooms are soft. At this point you can add wine if you wish. Add the thyme to this and to finish by adding the double cream and bringing to the boil. Simmer and allow to thicken. Add seasoning to taste.

Serve the rice onto the plate with the fillet rested on top. Coat the fillet with the sauce. Don’t go mad with the rice or sauce as presentation is everything.

To prepare the dessert

Lightly toast the oats and allow to cool. Take the raspberries, oats, Greek yogurt and a dessert spoon of honey and stir together in a bowl along with a splash of spirit of choice. Don’t beat this mixture, you need the raspberries to break up but don’t pulverize the mix. Spoon this into a tall glass and either sprinkle with crushed chocolate flake or push half a flake into the top to decorate. Chill in the fridge until ready to serve.

That is your meal- the only thing to do now is lay the table and set the mood- the rest is up to you.

Happy Valentines day and whatever you do, be safe and enjoy yourselves! ♥♥♥

ELFM will be there of course – doing some outdoor broadcasts – but not just us…

Over 40 organisations from the Fire Service, colleges through to Job Centre plus and Credit Union. From bingo, raffles to bouncy castles, football to face painting, circus skills and competitions. A host of organisations will be promoting their services to the local community in the hope of encouraging people access local provision, join local residents groups, volunteer, access learning and employment and discuss any community related issues with the Police, fire, housing and other counselling services.

Everything is free. Although there will be a small charge for hot food as money will be going towards the Internet Café which will, hopefully, be running at the Henry Barran Centre in the near future.

What’s it like round here?

Time to get to grips with what’s happening in Gipton today. We start off with a podcast that Janet Heighton made before she left the Church of the Epiphany last year – Seven Years in Seven Minutes. We will also try and catch up with Janet who is now over in Skelmersdale.

Then we have Alan Taylor in the studio – Councillor for Gipton and Harehills and Deputy Lord Mayor of Leeds. What is the Council doing for the area?

And our final guest of the evening is Lou Hemmerman from Leeds University who is working up in Gipton as part of the Timescapes Research Project. Universities studying people in rundown areas of the city… who benefits?

Alan Metcalfe and Adrian Sinclair are presenting – and would be happy for your contributions – emails, texts, comments on the website and phone-calls

You can listen again to the programme yourself…
