Old Smeaton

Posted by katy on May 7, 2008 – 1:29 pm | 2 Comments

Young people from John Smeaton High School have always been involved with East Leeds FM – in fact the first three voices ever heard on ELFM back in 2003 were all Year 9 girls from Smeaton. When the school was built back in the 1960s, it was a building ahead of it’s time - known as the Smeaton Project and designed by John Poulson - the (in)famous architect.

By 2007, the building itself was in a sorry state of repair - and a brand new school was being built next to the old one. As students and staff prepared for the move, Katy worked with Year 8 pupils to record their memories of the old place and their aspirations for the new school.

In 2008, ELFM plans to return soon to the new school building to find out how it’s all turned out…

Out of Armley

Posted by Adrian on April 16, 2008 – 3:21 pm | 4 Comments

It might not be quite what you expect - a jobs-fair inside a prison. But the ‘Out of Armley’ group of training providers and employers recognise that one of the ways of stopping re-offending is to ensure that prisoners have a clear plan of how they are going to get employment once they are released.

So that was the idea of having a jobs-fair; the first one ever at HMP Leeds in Armley.

ELFM have worked closely with the prison and probation service for a number of years - see the Outside Looking In series of programmes - and we were only too happy to come and see what happened on the day…
