Friday 4th December: Two Valleys… Many Views

On Friday – Two Valleys Radio takes the lead. One of our jingles for Two Valleys Radio is “Two Valleys…Many Views” and on our opening broadcast day from the village of Honley in the Holme Valley – you’ll be getting many views indeed:

2-4pm Aim High
Looking at the High Schools in the Valleys (Colne Valley, Honley and Holmfirth) – our opening show will be led by students from Honley High School with live interviews with a range of staff, governors and students from all of the schools. What’s going on in our high schools? Are they creative places? How do they link with the communities they are part of? And what hope for young people moving on to careers in difficult times…

4-5pm What’s it like round here?
This broadcast is coming from Honley – but what kind of place is it? Local historian Peter Bray knows more about Honley than most anyone. We let him set the scene. And who’s making a difference? The Parish Council, local Councillors .. or the Honley Trust. What are the key issues for the village anyway? And as we head into the big Christmas weekend for the village, we bring the three churches round a table together to talk about what’s happening and what their role is in the life of the place.

5-6pm The Hills are alive…
There will be plenty of music coming to you over the next few days including lots of local music. We’re giving you a bit of a sneak preview of some of the musical delights coming up…

6-7pm Into the Valleys
Time for us to profile some of the exciting events and initiatives happening in the two valleys and beyond. What about older people in the valleys. We’re profiling Holmfirth organisation Friend to Friend – active in both valleys helping people to enjoy a healthier, more active and less lonely old age.Two Valleys Radio also attended the recent Transition North conference in Slaithwaite and we’ll be looking at what has happened since then. Also – from a bit further afield. “Don’t get me started” … do we need to sit down and do a bit more thinking and talking before we act? News from the Huddersfield Salon

7-9pm Be Prepared
We are very grateful to the 6th Holme Valley scouts for allowing us to use the Honley Scout Hut throughout the weekend for our broadcast base. We’re working with the Scouts, Beavers, Cubs and Explorers on a special show to round off our evening’s broadcast. Quizes, challenges and prizes. A feature on Project Nepal. The Duke of Edinburgh Awards (this will include a first for Two Valleys Radio – tune in for live knitting on the air). And special guests Hade Edge Junior Band will play us out in style

10am-3pm The Caravan of Love

Our very special outside broadcast unit will be up on Church Street right in the middle of the Christmas Street Market in Honley and we will be covering that, the Christmas Tree Festival, Arts and Crafts at the Village Hall and all the other events happening in Honley.

Pop in to the caravan and join us live on air. We’ll be having some previews of some of the local festivals coming up; a whole bunch of special guests and the one-and-only Roger Davies playing live at lunchtime.

3-5.30pm Peace Love and Understanding?

From 3pm East Leeds FM will take over the broadcast with a range of material looking at the theme “Peace, Love and Understanding”. This is the second themed broadcast put together by ELFM Director of Words, Peter Spafford. The last one took the theme of Fear and was both entertaining and thought-provoking. This month’s programme looks just as intriguing…

Peace, Love and Understanding? That all important question mark is the key.
Peace and goodwill, peace in the world, peace of mind– what does peace mean to you, where do you find peace?
A rich Christmas market-stall of goodies, including contributions from local poets, Ian McMillan, children from Austhorpe Primary School, home-grown music, comment, and reports from recent events like the recent Leeds Summat…..

Midday – 1pm The Honley Hit Hut
Starting as we mean to go on with lots of live music. First up a bit of brass from Hade Edge; songs from Mark Denton and Adam Lacey; and a set from Jaqui Wicks who has just released a new album Vintage

1-2pm Everybody Loves Folk Music
Roddy Johnson present live sessions and interviews from the cream of the Leeds folk scene.

2-3pm The show must go on!
We’re heading for panto season in the Valleys. How’s it going for the Honley Players and a round-up of some of the best of the local pantos to look out for. Plus a specially-commissioned seasonal radio drama performed live in the studio and news on how we intend to build towards a community radio play for the two valleys.

3-4pm Junor Disco Dungeon
Live sessions and interviews from singers and bands who are under the age of 19 but have a whole heap of talent. This month we have for your listening pleasure Indie upstarts Night Herons and Garforth boys The Koodoos

4-5.30pm Art to Art
The artist is king (or queen). Heading off with an in-depth discussion with no less than an emperor – Napoleon IIIrd will be in the studio talking about his work “one of the most visionary artists in the world today” (blimey – there’s something to live up to!). Sticking with the music theme, young artist Joe Hipkin will be playing live and we will be having a chat with Bar 1:22 to find out their plans to support young musicians in the area.

5.30 – 7.30pm Disco Dungeon
Kicking off with a half an hour of Hi-Fidelity – news and new releases from the Leeds Music Scene. Followed by two bands playing live for you in the dungeons of ELFM Towers: first off the Finnlys are back ahead of their upcoming new EP launch; and, you heard it here first, we’ve not only got Daniel Pearson in following his successful debut album ‘Satellites’ but he’ll be with some old friends from the newly re-formed All those Heroes

7.30pm – 9pm ‘Owt out and about
Who’s putting on what in the valleys? News from Mikron and the Satellites. What! No Moonraking in Slaithwaite this winter? Find out the full story. But don’t miss out on Imbolc and Cuckoo Festival. We bring the Jazz Fest team round a table with Festival of Folk – different valleys, different music… same issues? Film Festival in Holmfirth next year? You betcha. And might the pigs fly again?

Well the only thing that is certain is that you should keep coming back to listen again. Much of the material from our big December weekend of broadcasting will be up on the site to listen again in the coming weeks.

Had a lovely day (despite the weather) at the Transition North conference in Slaithwaite. A really interesting, stimulating day with a bunch of very motivated people.

Well done to Ruby, Hayley, Eugene and Paddy for working hard to record, photograph and edit during the day and manage to get this presentation together for the plenary session…

After a very successful launch weekend, we’re starting to gear up towards our next broadcast in Honley at the beginning of December. As part of that we are running 6 training sessions in half-term week (26-28th October) open to anyone and everyone who is interested in getting involved.

The sessions will be very much “hands-on” and practical. You can come to just one or all six if you fancy:

• On Monday in Marsden you’ll get a chance to make a pre-recorded feature;
• Tuesday in Slaithwaite have a go at some radio drama;
• and on Wednesday in Honley we’ll be coming to you live from the studio (well – practising anyway!).

October 10/11th 2009 was the big launch weekend for Two Valleys Radio: broadcasting live from the excellent Marsden Jazz Festival and also the brand new Pigs Might Fly Festival of Arts and Mental Health at Bates Mill. Surely that’s not possible – you cry – two outside broadcasts at once. Well… it was a case of two teams; a caravan and a campervan and a bit of to- and fro-ing!
