broadcasting to both valleys at once
The ELFM Musicathon 2010 has been and gone!
24 hours of music: all live, all local, non-stop… from 3pm on Saturday 1st through to 3pm on Sunday 2nd May 2010. This year the Musicathon was an official Live@Leeds fringe event.
Over 300 performers played, sang and acted over the 24 hours whilst a whole bunch of writers “chimed” the hours in with poetry and prose.
You can to listen again to all 24 hours of Musicathon 2010 right here on the ELFM website (and even watch the live video stream) and, if you still haven’t had enough, then you can still listen to the whole of Musicathon 2009 …
Thank you for all the donations we received during the musicathon … but you can still help ELFM save the Chapel and promote community arts making a difference in East Leeds.
Broadcasting: 01/05/10 - 02/05/10
Thanks to everyone who made the musicathon possible! It was a simply fantastic 24 hours of music, poetry and drama – 24 hours that you can listen to again. And if you want to see the video of it all then it’s all here just waiting for you!
3pm: Start all the Clocks
We’ve put a taste of the whole schedule in the first hour: The utterly stunning Jon Gomm; the lovely sounds of The Is of Idaho; together with some fantastically appropriate songs from young people at The David Young Community Academy. Each of our hours is themed and local writers are working with us to ‘chime’ in each of the hours – we start of with the theme of time.
4pm: The Next Generation
At Easter we started a new initiative for ELFM – The Next Generation. Twenty five young people from 6 different schools worked at the Electric Press building alongside the fabulous Rich Huxley from Hope and Social and Cleve Freckleton aka Rev Chunky. Taking the theme of the chapel itself, they created four brand new songs specially for the musicathon. They will all be performed in the second hour of the musicathon together with songs from The Scandals, The Koodoos, Little Primrose and Subconscious.
5pm: The Shiny Hour
More young people – this time the Shiny Band from Garforth Community College; who have created some acoustic loveliness specially for the musicathon. We are proud to be working with Garforth which has become such a hotbed of fantastic musical happenings and we’re already starting to get excited about this year’s Garforth Arts Festival
6pm: Folk this
A stunning hour of folk ahead with the best of Irish from The Jimmy Knocks and Sabrina Piggott rounded off with a touch of the pyscha-vaudevillians with Family Feelie
7pm: Jurassic Park: The Musical
From the sublime to the … absolutely fantastic. After last year’s delving into musical-thon-ness, Maggie 8 return with a specially written and created 1 hour musical extravaganza… prepare to be amazed
8pm: Saturday Night, Night Out
So you’re sat at home at 8 o’ clock on a Saturday night… time to get yourself ready and get out there on the town. Amongst the Saturday night stories we have music from Lunchtime Disco Club and the Escort Knights
9pm: Barefoot in the Chapel
For those who have seen him perform, you’ll know that Rob Galloway always performs barefoot. Anyone know why? Well – you just might find out, whilst listening to The Yalla Yallas, Kath Edmondson and Mojo 57
10pm: Heavenly Objects
We present a bunch of fantastic singer-songwriters – people not averse to braving the rigours of an acoustic night down at the pub. For one night only our heavenly objects will be Mr Gary C, Steve Bolton, Geraint Jones, Liz Reynolds and Giles Winterton. Sit back and enjoy
11pm: The Soundmillers
As the day draws to a close enjoy performances from two artists who’ve all been recording recently at Soundmill Studios: Dan Pearson and Hannah Trigwell
12pm: Acoustic Revolutionaries
Midnight has come and gone… but we’ve got a whole wealth of music to share with you. We’ve worked with the Adelphi-based Acoustic Revolutions on the two Cuckoo Fests and more. Tonight the revolutionaries in question are Miss Quincy (all the way from Canada), Hayley Gaftarnick, Charlie Bath and The Finnlys
1am: Cannonball Express
Charging out of Cannonball Studios for this year’s musicathon will be Ben Pike, Bootscraper and SSSSS … Yeehah
2am: Open All Hours
And this time we really are. Tonight we open our doors to Matt Bentley, The Phoenix Fall and Spirit of John
3am: Sound People
Well you might have noticed that there’s an election round the corner – and we’re not averse to a little dabbling in politics ourselves (although admittedly not usually at this time in the morning). Strong talk and strong music from Silverlode, Tsienna, Defenders of Style
4am: Funk That
It’s been a night to remember so far. Time to turn down the volume a bit (but not the bedcovers) with the Turnways and a some lovely ‘floaty wistfullness’ from March of Dimes
5am: Dawn Chorus
Finish the night with the beautiful sounds of Lucy Barker and Troy Faid and then it’s time for the musicathon to make the transition from night into day. We celebrate the coming of the new day with Giuliano Modarelli, Al Macsween and Richard Ormerod.
6am: Dissolve
Architect Jonathan Lindh has been working with us to develop plans to convert the Chapel into a permanent live broadcast centre. A musician himself he wanted to do something special that really allowed you to hear the chapel itself…
7am: Back to the Future
Writer Peter Spafford has been developing a whole new aspect of ELFM’s creative output. The spoken word. He has been responsible for all the writers’ involvement with the musicathon this year – chiming in the hours and developing the themes. For his own hour, he is joined by musicians Matthew Frederick and Heather Woodhead.
8am: Vegging Out
It’s well and truly morning now. Time to get yourself woken up, plant some ‘marrers’ and join the gentle madness that is King Courgette.
9am: Music Central
East Leeds’ best kept musical secret – the East Leeds Music Centre bring us a heady Sunday-morning combination of folk and steel pans to keep your musical juices flowing.
10am: Star-Cross’d Lovers
‘From forth the fatal loins of these two foes, a pair of star-cross’d lovers, take their life.’ Young people from Corpus Christi High School debate love and fate (as you do on a Sunday morning!) accompanied by the charming Jack and Gill’s daughter and the lovely Laura Jayne Hunter.
11am: The Local Delivery
Sunday morning deliveries are back in fashion with the Free Range choir, MILK ,The Gonzos and Seakipz. Keep it local!
12pm: If walls could talk
You know what they will… Keeping up our new-found love of all things radio drama. A specially written radio drama brings the chapel alive accompanied by Andie Mills and the Good in Parts choir.
1pm: I believe
Seacroft Methodists have welcomed us wholeheartedly into their church. And we truly believe that we can do something special with the chapel and bring it to life again. But what do you believe? David Laycock discusses with music from the Concordia choir, singers from David Young Community Academy, the Domaine Youth Band and Cleve Freckleton – Rev Chunky .
2pm: Stop all the Clocks
It’s almost over. Just the little matter of Tigers that Talked and Hope and Social to bring the musicathon to a storming conclusion.
3pm: Phew It’s all over. Time for a rest.
Leave us your email address and we’ll remember you next time you visit.
Also if you have a gravatar it will appear next to your comment.>

We greatly enjoyed the 12 to 1 pm session 'If walls could talk' - the plays were entertaining and made us laugh out loud in places. The songs were very well performed by the choir and soloists. Especially liked 'She Moved Thru the Fair' and 'Silver Dagger'.. Also the David Young Academy singers who followed were great - lots of real talent on show. Liked the Il Divo song particularly but it was a pleasure listening to them all.

Tom - ages ago 28th April 2010, 4:02pm
But this one should be me because the gravatar exists.
