Beyond One World Day

Teachers from across Leeds created three individual short programs from their experiences of the ‘Beyond One World Day’ seminar held at The West Park Centre by Artforms, the Music and Arts Initiative from Education Leeds. The event was organised in partnership with the Ethnic Minority Achievement Team, International Relations at Leeds City Council and the the Leeds Development Education Centre.

The aim of the day to look at different initiatives that Leeds’ schools could be part of that would take them beyond the usual organisation of ‘One World’ Days to look at developing greater understanding, tolerance, respect and empathy between children and young people of different cultural backgrounds.

Global Youth Action and you!

“We really had fun making our ‘Stereotypes’ DVD. We got to interview people about how they had been stereotyped and learnt how to use a video camera and edit our film.” Sukbir, aged 14

Global Youth Action at
Leeds DEC

Leeds Development Education Centre can give your youth group a grant of £1000 to:

  • Connect to a global issue you are interested in *
  • Challenge and deepen your understanding about it
  • Change something! Take action on your issue

For example:

Connect: A girl’s group were interested in finding out about girls’ education

Challenge: They found out a lot of girls do not get the chance to go to school

Change: They used their grant to pay for a dance teacher to help them put together a dance about a girl in Pakistan whose parents can’t afford to send her to school any more. They performed their dance in front of the local community and raised awareness about the issue

*A global issue can be anything from music, fashion, food, looking after the environment, refugees, children’s rights, slavery, homelessness, education, racism, climate change, recycling, etc! Young people have looked at all these issues as part of Global Youth Action.

“It was good to make a CD. It shows people what young people are capable of. It had a mixture of singing and spoken word. Our message was, children have rights and they shouldn’t be abused.” Mark, aged 15
